Bodrum is a popular resort area along Turkey’s turquoise coastline, renowned for its stunning beaches, summer parties, and luxury resorts. Since late 2015, the region has gained fame due to the opening of several international chain hotels, enhancing its status as a marine destination. Our family loves this area; my wife’s family owns a summer house in Akyarlar, making it an ideal winter getaway for us, especially since summer sees an influx of tourists. However, we prefer the historical aspects of Bodrum, like Bodrum Castle, also known as the Castle of St. Peter. The Origins of Bodrum Castle

The construction of Bodrum Castle began in 1402, after the Knights Hospitaller fled from the island of Rhodes due to the advancing Ottoman Empire. Strategically located at the entrance of the Gulf of Gökova, the site was chosen to bolster their defense and protect their interests in the eastern Mediterranean. Using stones from the nearby Mausoleum at Halicarnassus—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—the castle was built to endure both time and attack, with walls that still dominate the Bodrum skyline today.

Bodrum Castle’s architecture is a captivating blend of medieval and Byzantine influences. It features five distinct towers—the English Tower, French Tower, German Tower, Italian Tower, and Spanish Tower—each named after the nationalities of the knights who contributed to its construction.
