Mezze Athens has now become one of our personal favorites among the restaurant recommendations most frequently requested by our guests visiting Athens. Especially after the pandemic, many rooftop restaurants opened across the city, and with their stunning views of the Acropolis of Athens, they have become extremely popular during spring and summer evenings. While I will prepare a separate article about those venues, this time I would like to talk about a place that is not overly fancy but truly stands out for its delicious food and warm atmosphere.

We chose Mezze Athens to celebrate my wife’s birthday, looking for somewhere that was neither a typical Greek taverna nor a formal fine-dining restaurant, but rather something comfortably in between — local, relaxed, and authentic. Upon the recommendation of our Greece representative and close family friend Thora, founder of Afteryou Tours, we decided to try Mezze Athens, conveniently located within walking distance of our hotel.

From the very first plates of meze, the freshness of the ingredients was immediately noticeable. The olive oil–based dishes were light and well-balanced, the octopus and calamari were perfectly cooked, and the seafood platter in particular exceeded our expectations in both portion size and flavor. It quickly became one of our favorite seafood experiences in Athens. We paired our meal with high-quality ouzo, served at the right temperature, with a smooth and balanced aroma that complemented the dishes beautifully.

Considering its central location, the price-performance ratio is remarkably reasonable. Compared to many of the newer rooftop restaurants where you often pay primarily for the view, Mezze Athens offers genuine Mediterranean /Aegean flavors at fair prices. The atmosphere is not flashy, but warm and welcoming, and the service team is attentive and sincere, making you feel less like a tourist and more like a regular guest of the neighborhood.

If you are looking for a relaxed yet high-quality dining experience in Athens, where flavor takes priority over scenery, Mezze Athens should definitely be on your list. For us, it was not just a dinner, but a memorable birthday evening and one of those authentic Athens moments we will happily return to.
